Shakespeare & the Human

At Performing Humanity, we like to notify readers of new materials emerging in the field, such as the upcoming Shakespearean International Yearbook special issue on "Shakespeare & the Human."

The issue takes a complex look at questions of humanness and humanity as they appear throughout Shakespeare's oevre, raising the question of "What makes Shakespeare centrally exceptional to the current humanities curriculum, a measure and minimum unit for University administrations and the general public to recognize the activities of the humanities?"

Bringing together scholars from a range of backgrounds and experience levels, "Shakespeare & the Human" also considers questions about the relationship between human and non-human animals in Shakespeare plays from the canonical to the lesser-known. It importantly considers on the level of history, physicality, philosophy, and metaphor how humans understand themselves and their behaviors through the lens of the Other -- the non-human -- however it may be defined.

Performing Humanity considers this text an important piece of the ongoing dialogue about humanness in the past and now.
